Over more than ten years of marketing experience, I’ve seen my fair share of successful marketing campaigns. I’ve also seen other campaigns that from the start were pegged as great ideas only to result in total failure. The question I have been asking myself as of late is what sets the most successful campaigns apart from those that simply do not work. The answer isn’t always simple but the good news is that success leaves clues.
Even though marketing has evolved a great deal over the last decade, the basic ideas remain the same. Despite the consistent nature of basic marketing principles, many marketers, web site owners, and small businesses do not use the best techniques for generating profitable campaigns. This is largely due to a belief that newer is better. However, this simply is not true. Rather, a focus on what works is always the best. Here are some marketing tips that I’ve found to work again and again.
Segment your market. One of the most powerful marketing strategies is market segmentation. With proper segmentation comes a thorough understanding of your target market. This includes what’s important to them and what motivates them. Once you have this knowledge, you can target campaigns with the right message and the right timing needed to deliver results.
Create a compelling offer. A marketing offer is the driving force of marketing promotions that drive results. In fact, testing has proven that the offer is the most significant criterion for conversion. Focus on your offer if you want to be successful.
Run split tests. The concept of split testing is quite simple but surprisingly, few ever take the time to. When you split test a web page or direct marketing piece, you determine which version produces the better result. Each time you test a single element so that you continue to improve results over the long term. This is time and money well invested.
Build a marketing team. No matter how talented you are, building a marketing team is a great way to improve results. As you create new ideas, a marketing team can build on that idea, improve it, and consider multiple options. Your team should be comprised of a diverse group of people who can add to each others ideas.
Don’t sell on price. I’ve seen so many marketers fail because they sell on price alone. This leads to a discounting war, lower profitability, and often financial losses. Rather, focus on creating so much value that the price becomes insignificant to the value you are creating for the individual.
Keep your messages consistent. Consider the entire user experience before you launch a campaign. From email to website to offer, ask yourself if the prospect having a consistent user experience. If they are, then your campaigns stands above ninety-eight percent of others.
Create value after the sale. Marketing doesn’t end once a sale is made. In fact, more emphasis should be placed on enhancing with existing clients. This can often create significantly more revenue at a much lower expense. Think about how you’ll grow your customer relationships and invest your marketing budget. This is an investment that you can’t afford to overlook.
Test. Test. Test. In addition to split testing, you should use multiple forms of testing in each marketing discipline. For direct marketing, test headlines, offers, copy, time of direct mail drop, etc. Consider testing a life long requirement.
Integrated Marketing Works Best. You cant rely on one form of marketing to carry you to success. Its somewhat okay to generate many of your leads or sales through pay-per-click marketing for example but what happens when that dries up? Use multiple media sources to meet your goals.
Get some experience. Nothing can replace your own personal experience. Know what works and what doesn’t by doing the work yourself. Once you have the knowledge, you can share it with your marketing team and rely on others to do the work for your. If you don’t have the real world marketing experience, you can’t get it from a book.
Consider these marketing tips before you start your next campaign. If you want to be truly successful remember to keep things simple and apply what you already know works on a consistent basis. These techniques and tips are applied by successful marketers on a daily basis. The result is an ever growing success rate of effective marketing.
